As a pyrography artist, woodburning will always be my first love. The grain, the smell, the permanence of the burn—it’s where I feel most at home creatively. But I’ve never believed in limiting myself to just one medium. Some purists will argue that pyrography should stand on its own, letting the natural beauty of the wood shine without interference. I respect that perspective, but I also believe there are countless ways to enhance pyrography while still honoring the wood itself.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to mix media with woodburning:

1. Adding Color

Color can completely transform a pyrography piece, adding mood, energy, and focus. Each coloring method brings something unique to the table:

Watercolors – Best for light woods. A gentle wash lets the natural grain show through while giving subtle tints of color.

Colored Pencils – Perfect for crisp lines, fine details, and layering shades. They can add depth without overpowering the burn.

Acrylics – Bold, vibrant, and high-contrast. Acrylics can make a piece pop, especially when you want dramatic highlights or focal points.

The key is balance—using color to highlight, not hide, the natural beauty of the wood. A wash or light layering technique is often enough to enhance without overwhelming.

2. Embedding Jewelry

One of my newer explorations has been embedding charms and jewelry into my work. With engraving tools, I can bore small spaces into the wood and place charms, beads, or other accents.

This technique:

• Adds dimension and texture

• Creates a focal point for the eye

• Brings a playful or luxurious feel to a piece

It’s a simple but striking way to merge wood with another tactile art form.

3. Foil for Shine and Texture

Sometimes a piece needs a little shimmer. Foil—especially gold and silver—can be used to bring luster and reflection to the design.

I especially love this when working on metallic subjects, like swords or armor. The foil reflects light in unique ways, changing the piece’s mood depending on the angle. It’s a wonderful way to layer in depth, both visually and physically.

Why Mix Media?

To me, pyrography doesn’t have to be confined to “woodburning only.” Mixing media opens new doors for storytelling, mood, and creativity. It doesn’t replace the beauty of pyrography—it elevates it.

Every artist has their own approach. Mine is about pushing boundaries, exploring textures, and discovering what happens when fire meets color, shine, or embedded details.
